Big and Small Canal Excavation and Re-excavation Schemes
Worth Tk. 236.4 Crore to be implemented by SCC
Abdur Razzak, Sylhet : A big project worth Tk. 236.4 crore for big and small canal excavation, re-excavation and recovery of canals and chora (small canal) under the jurisdiction of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) has been taken up by the SCC authority. The schemes have been approved by Executive Committee for National Economic Council (ECNEC) on December 22nd, with Chairperson of the ECNEC and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was in the chair. The SCC got such a big economic allotment in this very field for the first time this year.
With the implementation of this project, encroached upon canals can be recovered from the captivity of illegal encroachers and in this way, the prime problem water-logging that engulfed vast tract of land and homesteads of Sylhet City areas time and again for the last few years will be mitigated, hoped Mr. Enamul Habib, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sylhet City Corporation. Not only that, with the help of the implementation of these schemes beautification of canals and choras (small canals) will be enhanced, hoped the CEO further.
In implementing this project the government will finance Tk. 200.94 crore and SCC itself will earmark Tk. 35.45 crore individually. Within the jurisdiction of this project, 26.96 kilometers Rod, Cement and Concrete (RCC) retaining wall will be built. Besides 5 kilometers U-type drain, 3.5 kilometers of walkway and 10 kilometers canal and chora (small canal) will be excavated.
Moreover, 9 equipments including MPSIBI excavators, which are amphibious in nature and can be used to excavate small river and mediocre rivers too, will be procured under this project. The choras (small canal) under the project will cover Malnichora, Gowalichora, Gaviar Khal (canal), Mugnichora, Kalibari Chora, Holdichora, Dhopachora, Jugnichora, Bhubichora, Babuchora, Rotnar Khal, Jaintar Khal and Boshur Khal.
The project has been framed at the end of 2014 and through stages and phases the project has been approved in December this year. The implementation of the project will commence in January 2017 and be completed by December 2018, says the Engineering Section of SCC.
This project has been called an epoch-making project in the history of Development of Sylhet City, says CEO Mr. Enamul Habib who added, “The main credit goes to ECNEC alternative Chairperson and Finance Minister A. M. A Muhit, who played a pioneering role in passing out this project at the ECNEC meeting. He (Finance Minister) gave us guideline from the beginning of the formulation of the project and up to passing out this project, time and again put up the project to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who with utmost sincerity passed the project in the ECNEC meeting. The Premier has ordered all to enhance and ensure beautification of Sylhet City, the holy city of Hazrat Shahjalal (R.).
In order to implement this project Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, requested Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operative Minister Engineer Khondaker Mushrraf Hussain who ordered Local Government Secretary Abdul Malek to implement the project within the stipulated time. The CEO said the Engineering Department of SCC has been trying its utmost to implement the project.
Acting Chief Engineer SCC Mr. Nur Azizur Rahman said, with the implementation of this project, Sylhet City will wear new beautification and splendid look. He (Mr. Aziz) added, “The walkway, drain and retaining wall to be built on both edge of Haldichora (small canal), with foot over-bridge will look like Hatirjheel in the capital.’’ For this, Mr. Chief Engineer said, design has been made to implement this beautification and glory of Sylhet City.
